Aside — Two Perfect Beauties

From Fitzwilliam Darcy to Georgiana Darcy

Nr 12, Berkeley Sqr

London

August 23

My Dear Sister,

Greetings from London. I hope that the beauties of the summer continue at Pemberley, for here it is as hot and humid as the tropics, but instead of “the spiced Indian air,” we are met each morning with the scents of soot and decay. (Lest I make the city seem too unappealing, I will tell you that as I sit here writing you, a nightingale is serenading the square. Its song stills my troubled mind.)

My wife tells me that, in addition to her sister Miss Catherine, you have been enjoying the company of our good friend Miss Giniver, which pleases me enormously. You know that I believe Augustina to be an intelligent, caring young woman, and I have always been pleased to see your friendship grow. And Kitty is quite as delightful as her eldest sister but one, if not quite so serious-minded — and I hope you and even she will forgive me if I say that, while she is very pretty, she is not quite the equal in beauty to my Elizabeth. Then again, I know that both of you will understand when I say that I do not believe that Elizabeth’s equal in beauty exists. To my eye, at least, she is the abstract for all beauty, and so any variation, however pleasing, must ultimately be found wanting — aside from your own, of course, which is sans pareil. I must think on how it is that there can be two perfect beauties in the world, and both of them living at Pemberley. I am the luckiest of men for many reasons, and while the aesthetic perfection of my wife and sister are not at the pinnacle of those reasons for my felicity, yet your comeliness cannot but help but fill me with pleasure and reflected pride, and so too Elizabeth’s.

Speaking of my bride, your new sister — I hope that you have been taking care of her, as I know she has been attempting to take care of you and Kitty. I know that Elizabeth gives an air of self-reliance and accomplishment, yet her letters betray to me that she is, at the very least, lonely, a pain whose cause I can only lay at my own feet, having abandoned her this fortnight. Please, do your best to include her where you can. Let Kitty know that I asked. She may tease Elizabeth that I have asked so — but I believe that Elizabeth will feel better for Kitty’s teasing than without it.

My wife tells me that you have lately been reading something in French, and says that she would very much like to join you, her sister, and Miss Giniver (as well as Miss Godwin, who is, Elizabeth tells me, quite interesting) — but is held back by her lack of facility with the language, the first fault in her character I have yet detected. Might you find some way to include her in your reading? I know that Elizabeth would be most grateful, and so should I.
